Lively trade for females at Chelford
Saturday 6th January 2007

The largest sale of pedigree Continental sheep seen at Chelford for many years was held on Saturday 6th January 2007, sponsored by both Farmers Guardian and Barclays Bank.

Vendors and purchasers were attracted to the Centre from all over the UK and Northern Ireland, provoking a lively trade throughout from a packed sale ring. 79 Pedigree Beltex were entered for the second winter show on behalf of the Society.

The leading Beltex entry was the breed Champion, chosen by the day’s judge, John Howieson of the Lamberhurst flock. He chose as his Champion Carsloe Gilly, a March 2003 born ewe from Alex Gibson, New Cumnock, Ayrshire, this ewe was first in it’s class at Dumfries Show 2006 and was sired by Andy Van’t Zaubekedal. She was served in October by Hawkwing, the Reserve Male Champion at the Premier Sale at Carlisle in August 2006, and she made 1500 guineas to M. Pritchard of Llanerchymedd, Anglesey.

Alex Gibson also sold a February, 2004 born ewe, Holmbeck Heve, in lamb to Pentland Hero, for 600 guineas to G. Cropper of Rossendale, Lancashire, whilst the leading gimmer came from Northern Ireland breeder Alan Lecky of County Tyrone, who enjoyed an outstanding trade for his consignment of ewes, gimmers and ewe hoggs. His leading gimmer, a May 2005 born and home bred by Brickrow Highland Warrior and in lamb to Whatmore Handy Man, made 550 guineas to R. J. Shaw of Rugeley, Staffordshire.

Regular consigners to the Chelford Beltex sales, Messrs. Shanks & Thom, Lanarkshire, saw their leading gimmers make 450 guineas, twice, each time for home bred Group 1 Scrapie Genotype gimmers, each being sold into Wales, with one going to D. A. Jones, Abergele, North Wales, and the other to G. Morris, Camarthen, South Wales.
