Thursday 30th September 2004

The top priced Beltex at the special sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Thursday 30th September 2004 was 1,050gns for a lamb ram from Allan Jackson's Headlind flock at Covington Mill Farm, Thankerton, Biggar, Lanarkshire.

The April-born Headlind Hot Scotch a scrapie genotype one lamb was bought by Beltex Society member and butcher Jimmy Mulholland, of Great Orton, Carlisle. The ram was by Wonderboy which sired prizewinning ram lambs at this year's Royal Highland Show as well as the record ram lamb at 3,600gns and the record ewe lamb at 4,700gns.

Mr Jackson also sold the only ewe in the catalogue, the February 2001 born Headlind Earth Queenm for 500gns to RJ Lambert, Moss Farm, Wigglesworth, Skipton. She is by The Rustler which has sired ram lambs up to 6,800gns and shearlings up to £3,200gns for the Headlind and Pentland flocks. Close behind at 1,000gns was another lamb ram from Gavin Shanks and Alan Thom’s Garrion flock at Bowmanhurst, Brownlee Estate, Carluke, Lanarkshire, which sold to an undisclosed buyer.

Two shearling rams each brought the next price of 600gns. First was Low Heighley Geronimo from Clare Walker, of The Paddocks, Low Heighley, Morpeth, Northumberland, selling to D Strachan and Son, of East Shawtonhill Farm, Chapelton, Strathaven, Lanarkshire.

Second at 600gns was Horseclose Guiness, a scrapie genotype one shearling tup bred by James McGarva, of Horseclose Farm, Cummertrees, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Purchasers were Davies Bros, Lan Farm, Gwynfe, Llangadog, Dyfed, who also paid 550gns for an aged ram, Dun-Mor Fabian, from Mrs Anne Strory, of Hobbiesburn, Longtown, Carlisle.

Also at 550gns was another shearling ram from Mrs Jane Cruikshank, of Drumrash Farm, Parton, Castle Douglas, a scrapie genotype one son of Brickrow Erupt, which sold to GE Edgar, of Grove Farm, Ayside, Grange over Sands, Cumbria. Mrs Cruickshank sold an imported scrapie genotype one shearling to Stroquhan Estate, Stroquhan House, Dunscore, Dumfries, for 520gns.

Averages: 3 aged rams, £395.50; 18 shearling rams, £342.42; 6 lamb rams, £ 596.75.
