Dungannon In-lamb Sale
of MV Accredited Pedigree Beltex Sheep
Saturday 6th December 2003
The sale of in lamb ewes was the first official
sale of in lamb Beltex in N.Ireland and was a bold step by four breeders
which has set the standard for future sales.
The club Chairman Hugh O’Neill brought out four shearlings of show
quality and was well rewarded for his commitment. He topped the sale at
1150gns paid by a Mr Young from Magherafelt. He chose the ewe early and
was not deterred by the opposition from registered pedigree breeders.
A second shearling from the same flock fetched 1000gns and was bought
by Brendan McQuaid Banbridge to join his flock of quality ewes. Mr O’Neills
ewes were in lamb to his imported ram lamb also a group one genotype.
The third highest price of 750gns was paid twice, once for a shearling
ewe shown by W Carson, an imported female from the Sammels flock. This
ewe was in lamb to the group one stock ram (888) owned by C Barnes. This
ram was imported from the Korenhoff flock in February 03.
The second to obtain 750gns was a home bred shearling ewe sired by Ravara
Bass from the Beechtree flock shown by P & C Barnes. She was in lamb
to Chou Chou DuPre Otis. They were snapped up by Wade and Alison McCrabbe
Co Donegall and Mr Young Magherafelt respectively. Colin said that this
was an excellent sale with 28 out of 29 females presented selling rapidly.
We now know what we believed for some time that there is a strong demand
for the quality females in lamb. We would hope to build on this each year
continuing to bring quality sheep to our customers enabling new flocks
to be established. I will be disappointed if some of these sheep do not
feature in the show rings during the show season of 04.
It was an added bonus on the day when several buyers joined the Irish
club and requested further information to enable them to become active
breeders.
