Dungannon Irish Premier Show and Sale
Saturday 6th September 2003
Dungannon Farmers Mart was the venue for the Irish Beltex Sheep
Breeders premier sale. This proved a convenient location drawing a large
attendance on the day. The club had taken the effort to ensure that the sheep
presented were all scrapie monitored and that a large percentage of these
were Brucella Ovis tested and ready for immediate export to GB and the ROI.
The judge for the show was David Jones, Beltex Society Chairman who complemented
the breeders on their well presented sheep of a high quality with excellent
muscling. His champion on the day was an aged ewe from the now famous Tullygarley
flock owned by the Currie family. Reserve went to a ram lamb showed by Mrs
Cynthia Eakin. First in their respective classes were Brendan McQuaid - Aged
Ram, Alan Lecky - Shearling Ram, Wade and Alison McCrabbe - Shearling ewe
and the ewe lamb class was won by Alan Lecky and later purchased by young
breeder Paul Barnes for his new Rock-Solid flock.
The judging was followed immediately by the sale conducted
by Trevor Wylie where the demand for the breed soon became apparent with
a virtual clearance for all lots on offer.
From a catalogue of 133 sheep the sale averages are shearling rams 520gns,
aged rams 520gns, ram lambs 325gns. In the female section shearling ewes
265gns, aged ewes 375gns,
These averages show a significant rise on previous year’s. Top price
