FEMALES TOP THE BELTEX SALE AT DUNGANNON The Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club Premier Sale in Dungannon Farmers Mart was another success for the breed, well attended by both pedigree and an increasing number of commercial breeders alike, with purchases heading as far afield as Cumbria and Scotland as well as several counties in the South of Ireland, and a select number of females taking the top prices of the day.
The sales topper at £1,995 was the pre-sale show Female Champion, a shearling ewe from Charlie & David Seaman, Florencecourt. Gorteen Mildred by Beechtree Keystone out of Gorteen Hazel has bloodlines from the Van’t Korenhof and V/H Groentenhof flocks and was 1st in her class at Clogher Valley Agricultural Show earlier in the year. After keen bidding, the hammer fell to Alfie Murray and son Alfie from Ballygowan, Co. Down in a joint purchase for their Ravara and Vestry flocks.
Next in the top prices was another shearling ewe, this time presented by Paul Barnes, Dungannon. Rocksolid Molly ET by Rocksolid Knuckleduster out of a Belgian bred ewe, stood 3rd in the pre-sale show and sold to breeder Matthew Burleigh, Kinawley for £1,627.
The 1st prize ewe lamb presented by Limavady breeder Fergus Harbinson was next to make the four figure sum. Glenkeen Naughty But Nice ET (FHG.N1602) is another by the Rocksolid Knuckleduster sire and out of Glenkeen Ginko. This ewe lamb was knocked down to TJ Gormley, Tuam, Co. Galway for £1,575. The 2nd placed ewe lamb, also from the Glenkeen flock, left the ring unsold.
Fergus Harbinson also received the top price of the day for the rams presented, and averaged a very respectable £647 for his pen of seven. His top price of £1050 was received for the pre-sale Show Champion, a shearling ram Glenkeen Micro Dot ET. This ram is also sired by Rocksolid Knuckleduster out of Glenkeen Kelpie, and was purchased by the show Judge, James Little, from Wigton, Cumbria for his Skiddaw View flock.
The shows Reserve Champion, a shearling ram from the Glenarm flock of Hugh O’Neill, was next best price. Lagyveagh Maverick, backed by full Belgian bloodlines, attracted the eye of several pedigree breeders, and was eventually knocked down to Dumfries breeder Ian McConnell for £945.
Reserve Female Champion went to Artnagullion Mod presented by Elizabeth McAllister. This 2nd placed shearling ewe is by the Clary King-Pin sire, champion at Glenarm Show 2008, and out of a Ulysses daughter Artnagullion Jelsea, and sold to Bessbrook breeder Mark Latimer for £441.
The 1st prize ram lamb was presented by Boardmills breeders Sam, Peter & Ruth Clarke. Creevy Nat King Cole is by the Corra Liam sire purchased in Carlisle in 2008, out of Creevy Jaylo, and left the ring unsold.
Taking the red rosette in the Aged Ewe class was Fort View Jane presented by Matthew Burleigh, Kinawley. This four year old ewe, bred by Brendan McQuaid, is out of a Belgian sire and a Fort View ewe, and sold for £368. Topping the prices in the aged ewe section were Colin Barnes and Alan Lecky. Colins entry, Corstane Kalypso, was bred in Scotland by Mary Dunlop, is sired by Airyolland Jinx out of Corstane Dana, with bloodlines to the famous Viagrow ram, stood 2nd in her show class and sold for £441. Fetching the same price was Alan Lecky for his entry Dergview ALD. L05 which stood 3rd in her show class and is by Whatmore Handyman out of a Viagrow sired ewe.
The only aged ram in the sale was presented by Cynthia Aiken, Dromara. Lagyveagh
Two ewe lambs at the sale sold with proceeds going to 2 very worthy causes. The first was presented by Hugh O’Neill, Glenarm, with the proceeds going to the Childrens Comfort Fund, A2 Ward, Antrim Area Hospital where young Ciaran O’Neill spent several days earlier in the summer. Lagyveagh Notre Dame is by the Goliath sire out of Lagyveagh Jennifer, stood 3rd in her show class, and sold to County Offaly breeder Brian Mathews for £378.
The second ewe lamb was presented by the Palmer Family, Glenarm with proceeds going to the Respiratory Ward also at Antrim Area Hospital where Beltex breeder, Hester Palmer, of the Burnside flock, passed away on 18th August. Burnside Nancy is by Northern Beltex Mister Man son of the 4,800gn Burnside Jethro ram and out of a Belgian bred ewe, stood 6th in her class and sold to Banbridge breeder Brendan McQuaid for £525.
