Chelford Annual Show & Sale
For the last 2 years, Scottish breeders and Welsh buyers have been absent from Chelford’s sale on behalf of the Beltex Society, due to the restrictions imposed following successive outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease and Bluetongue Disease.
The sale saw several breeders return from north of the border with entries of quality sheep, and they were well rewarded with a ‘super’ trade throughout. Marshall’s auctioneer Gwyn Williams commented that ‘ the return of Scottish vendors, and Welsh buyers, demonstated just how serious the impact of Bluetongue restrictions was to our business over the last 2 years. Today’s trade just took off from the first sheep in the ring, and carried on all the way through, with particularly keen demand for the young females later in the sale.
Long-standing breeder Frank Robinson from Lincolnshire had the difficult task of judging some strong classes, and chose as his Supreme Champion a shearling gimmer from the Clary flock of Jock McMillan, Castle Clary, Newtown Stewart. Clary Maiden is by Clary Kaiser Chief, a grandson of the 36000gns Tullygarley Elite and sold for 1000gns to Anglesey breeder Cliff Parry, Beaumaris for his Fron flock.
The Reserve Champion, and Champion Male, also came from the Clary flock in the guise of Clary Night Rider, a February-born Ram Lamb, and also by Kaiser Chief, who also made 1000gns , this time to Aberystwyth breeder and butcher Rob Rattray. Shearling Rams met a solid trade throughout as a large number of commercial producers fought hard to acquire crossing Rams fit to work. Malvern. Worcestershire breeders Andrew and Becky Bishop produced the top-priced Shearling Ram with Bishops Maubu, a Luggsmill Jethro son, who made 780gns to Messrs Pritchard, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey.
It was when the sale reached the Female section, however, and in particular, the Ewe Lambs, that trade really took off. In addition to his Supreme Champion, Jock McMillan saw his other gimmers make to 580 gns for another Kaiser Chief daughter, also going to Anglesey with Messrs Pritchard, whilst best gimmer from the Lamberhurst flock of Mrs Marshall, made 560 gns to Staffordshire breeder and showman Boomer Birch.
It was the sale of Ewe Lambs which really set the place on fire, however. Jock McMillan again led the way with another Kaiser Chief daughter, this time the February-born Clary Narcotic, Reserve Female Champion, who made 640 gns to David and Matthew Prince, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, who also dug deep to find 550 gns to secure another Kaiser Chief daughter, Clary Needy.
John and Heather Barclay, Maybole, Ayrshire, also brought an excellent pen of Ewe Lambs, and twice saw a top of 400 gns, for Beachy Numpty, a Kaiser Chief daughter, and for Beachy Naughty Naughty, a Wonderboy daughter, both being bought by Les and Sian Hewitt for their Southern Acres flock at Penyfford, just over the border near Chester. Overall, virtually a complete clearance, with many smiling face amongst both breeders and buyers, as they were able to get back to normal business. Averages: Show Results Auctioneers - Frank Marshall
