Beltex Continue to Impress at MoiraIrish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club Export Female Sale, 13th December 2008 Last week’s cold weather did little to deter purchasers, both new and old alike, from turning out to the Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club Export Female Sale on Saturday 13th December. In a year that has seen many breeders holding on to their females for replacements, there was a reduced entry in the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira, but with increased averages, an almost complete clearance and several exports to Southern Ireland, breeders were delighted with the results on the day.
Topping the sale again this year were 2 entries from the Lagyveagh flock of Hugh O’Neill, Glenarm, both being purchased by fellow breeder, Wade McCrabbe, Donegal, for his Ardstewart flock which topped the Carlisle Sale in August with a shearling ram at 10,000gns. Top price at 720gns was Lagyveagh Lover, a group two genotype and triplet born shearling out of a V/H Hoveke ram and a homebred ewe. She sold scanned with twins to the ten year old imported Cannon sire from the Belgian De Puydt flock. Lagyveagh Lena, a group three genotype shearling with full Belgian bloodlines out of the Goliath sire and Eve Des 4 Bonniers, was next to top the list. She was scanned with a single lamb also to the Cannon V/D Drie Musschen ram, and sold at 560gns. Another on the Ardstewart shopping list was the single entry from Ballyclare breeder Marbeth Scott. Hollylane Liverbird, an ARR/ARR shearling by the Cookstown Kelso 10th sire and out of Lagyveagh Harp, sold at 500gns in lamb with twins to Glenkeen Lazar. 440gns was the tops in the aged ewes for Charles & David Seaman’s Gorteen flock from Florencecourt. Gorteen Julie, a three year old group 3 ewe, is by the Beechtree Guy ram out of the famous Chouchou Du Pre Otis sire, and an Omagh ewe. She sold in lamb with twins to the Gorteen Lloyd ram, finding a new home in Kilkeel with new breeder, Wayne Houston, who purchased a further 2 ewes on his first outing. New breeder and vendor, Trevor King, Omagh sold the top priced ewe lamb entry. Riverdene Marshmallow, an ARR/ARR lamb, is out of the Van Doorneheide sire and an Omagh ewe, and sold to 260gns.
The Irish Beltex Club would like to wish every success to all the purchasers, and to thank Mr Alan Carson, ASC Farm Services, for his sponsorship of products which went to the purchasers of the 2 highest priced sheep. Thanks also to Mr Willie Wilson, auctioneer, and his staff at R.A. Noble & Co, Clogher for their excellent assistance; to Society Inspector Jonathan Aiken, show steward Brendan McQuaid, and everyone who helped to make the sale another success in the Beltex 2008 calendar. Sale Averages: Shearling ewes - £623; Aged ewes - £295.75; Ewe lambs - £196.00 |
