Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club

The Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club’s 2nd Show & Sale at Ballymena Mart on Monday 29th September 2008 saw an easier trade than their Premier Sale, with a top price of 600gns for the pre-sale show champion.

Brookvale Lost for Words, bred by Mark Latimer, Bessbrook, had several rosettes to his credit this season, including 3rd place at Armagh, Newry and Glenarm Shows. Sired by the Belgian ram The Hulk from the flock of Marc Baele, Horebeke, East Flanders, he is out of a home bred ewe from the Valenin Du Trou Du Baudet sire.

The evenings reserve male champion, the 2nd prize shearling ram from the Glebe flock of Fred Coulter, Ahoghill, left the ring unsold at 700gns. Glebe Lynx is by the Airyolland Jester ram from the McQuistin flock at Newton Stewart, and out of Ravara Jet Lag by a Belgian sire bred by Gerard Dossche, Ronse.

Next in the lineup of top prices at 520gns was the 3rd placed shearling ram from the Beechtree flock of Colin Barnes, Dungannon. Beechtree Lord Lichfield, a strong ARR/ARR ram is by Borderesk Jumping Jack out of the Airyolland Galliano sire, and a homebred ewe, and sold to breeder James Christie, Cloughmills.

Topping the ram lamb trade was the Damhead flock of Norman Wallace, Coleraine. Damhead Moses, a March born lamb with full Belgian bloodlines back to the Sammels, Van Avermaet and Moguit flocks is sired by the Goliath ram and out of Lagyveagh Julie. Placed 2nd in his class pre-show by judge Alison McCrabbe, Raphoe, Donegal, he was purchased by breeder John Young from Magherafelt for 440gns.

The small number of females presented were in strong demand from established breeders and new purchasers alike. Top price female was the 2nd placed shearling ewe from the Lagyveagh flock of Hugh O’Neill, Glenarm. Lagyveagh Lemon is sired by a Belgian ram from the flock of Pascal Wilkin and out of a homebred ewe by the Cannon sire from the De Puydt flock, and sold at 550gns.

The female champion and overall reserve champion ticket went to a shearling ewe from the Ravara flock of Alfie Murray & Son, Ballygowan. The group 1 Ravara Lacy is sired by Ravara Knightrider which also sired the 3,800gn Carlisle 2008 male champion and is out of the Elbert ram which was male champion at Carlisle 2005. The dam is a homebred ewe from the Drumrash Herbie sire. This stylish shearling left the ring unsold at 500gns.

The 1st prize aged ewe was Ravara Jemma from also from Alfie Murray’s Ravara flock. This 3 year old ewe is out of the Drumrash Herbie sire with bloodlines back to the famous Headlind Ee By Gum and The Rustler sires, and a homebred ewe, and sold at 320gns.
