Lanark Beltex Sale
Thursday 18th September 2008

The Beltex Scotland club sale at Lanark saw a high clearance rate and a substantial increase both in the number sold and the average price compared to the 2006 event. The sale was underpinned by a sound commercial trade with buyers bidding to four-figures for tups with the right conformation.

Top Price - Woodies Luke

Taking the top price was Stuart Wood, 21 Albyn Grove, Aberdeen, a member of the syndicate of five breeders who paid 10,000gns for Ardstewart Lord Almighty at the Carlisle sale. A 2,600gns top bid helped Stuart recoup some of his cash when the hammer came down on his pen leader, Woodies Luke which went to Dan Towers, Curwin Hill Farm, Wray, Lancaster whose Beltex recently topped the Bentham ram sale. This tight-skinned shearling with superb gigots is by the Belgian-bred tup Forager Van de Biesheuvel out of Bishopton Jemima. Another from the Woodies pen, Woodies Leo, a shearling by the same sire out of Dun-mhor Joyce, sold at 1,000gns to A & B Fisher, Lairdlaugh, Castle Douglas.

Horseclose Macho sold for 1000gns

It was a red-letter day for John McLean, Mains of Culsh, New Deer who has just started college at Oatridge, where the 2,000gns he received for his second-prize shearling, Culsh Local Hero, will certainly come in useful. This shearling is by Coningswick Jumbo out of Culsh Jewel and was knocked down to Andrew Morton, Lochend Farm, Denny, a commercial breeder with an impressive record of prime lamb and carcase championships. Also joining the Lochend flock, at 1,000 gns, was Aviemore Laurel, a gimmer consigned by Doreen Mair, Aviemore, Victoria Terrace, Turriff. This gimmer is by Kauwenberg Knockout out of Aviemore Gem and is half-sister to the 2008 Turriff Show Interbreed Champion.

Reserve Champion - Clary Laddie

Former president of the Blackface Breeders' Association, John Maxwell, Jaw Farm, Fintry, Stirlingshire, bid to 2,400gns for the reserve champion, Clary Laddie. Consigned by J McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart, this shearling is by Beachy Jack the Lad out of Clary Glennie. Another Jack the Lad son, Clary Licence-to-Kill, out of Clary Harlequin, made 2,100gns to D McVicar, who runs the Fyne flock of Beltex at Lephinchapel, Strachur, Argyll. Clary bloodlines also featured in Tiree Lynchpin, a shearling from the pen of 13-year-old Alastair McLean, Heylipol, Isle of Tiree. His pen topper is sired by Clary Junior out of Clary Judy and sold at 1,350 gns to Messrs Faulder, South Highgate, Beith, Ayrshire.

David Cunngingham, Walkerdyke, Strathaven sold the best of his pen at 1,200gns to McCosh Bros, Culterallers, Biggar. By Whatmore Hot Pot out of Walkerdyke Gina, this shearling had been used as a lamb in the Walkerdyke pedigree flock.

The Cochrane family from Richardton Farm, Darvel, Ayrshire sold their stock ram, Borderesk Jackaroo, at 2,300gns to the show judge James Whiteford, Tercrosset Farm, Brampton, Cumbria. This 3-shear by Airyolland Galliano out of Borderesk Frances was supreme champion at the 2006 Carlisle sale. The Cochranes then took 1,000 gns for Cochrane's Lightening, a shearling son of Jackaroo out of Cochranes Jenny selling to Messrs Fox, Elsdonburn, Kirknewton, Wooler, Northumberland, who later bid to 1,050gns for Cochrane's Magnificent, a ram lamb by Jackaroo out of Longley Garnet.

Champion - Beachy Mr Muscles

The champion came from the ram lamb class and was shown by John Barclay, Mid Brockloch, Maybole, Ayrshire. His champion, Beachy Mr Muscle, went under the hammer at 1,400 gns to Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall, Ainstable, Carlisle. A top bid of 1,100gns from commercial breeder, Mark McGibbon, West Quarter Farm, Alyth, secured Clary Maximum, a ram lamb from J McMillan's Clary pen. He is a son of Clary Lord-of-the-Rings out of Clary J-J.

At 1,000gns, Mary Dunlop, Corstane, Broughton, Biggar, bought back some Viagrow genetics with the purchase of Horseclose Macho, a Viagrow-sired ram lamb out of a 5,000gns record-price imported ewe, and consigned by James McGarva, Horseclose, Cummertrees, Annan.

Champion female and Res overall was Inveresk Loch Monar

Lanarkshire breeder Gavin Shanks, Bowmanhurst, Carluke showed the female champion, Inveresk Loch Monar, a gimmer by Woodwick Hercules out of Inveresk Gunhilda. She topped the female trade at 1,600 gns, selling to G & H Forsyth, Corra Farm, Castle Douglas, who in turn sold Corra Lillian at 1,000gns to Messrs Lambert, Moss Farm, Wigglesworth, Skipton. This gimmer is by Van t' Operhoverveld King Kong out of Bishopton Jocelyn. A 1,1100gns purchase from the Clary pen of gimmers marked the foundation of a new Beltex flock for Karen Shuttleworth, Heber House, Home Farm, Gargrave, Skipton. Her choice, Clary Lassy, stood second in the show, and is by Clary Kaiser Chief out of Clary Gem.
