Dungannon Beltex Sale
Saturday 6th September 2008
LORD ALMIGHTY – BELTEX TOPS AT £2,100 AT DUNGANNON
The Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club Premier Sale in Dungannon Farmers
Mart on Saturday 6th September 2008 exceeded all expectations, with
several lots making four figure sums, an 80% clearance and a massive
33% of sheep sold going for export . The sale, at which top quality
ram lambs were in great demand, was well attended by pedigree and
commercial breeders alike, with purchases heading as far afield as
North Yorkshire and Scotland as well as several counties in the South
of Ireland. Judge of the pre-sale show, Gerry O’Boyle from
Athlone, was delighted with the show of top quality sheep presented
and was full of praise for the Irish breeders.
Top price of the sale was a handsome £2,100, paid by Donegal
breeder Wade McCrabbe, vendor of the 10,000gn top priced sheep ‘Ardstewart
Lord Almighty’ at the Society’s Premier Sale in Carlisle
a few weeks ago. ‘Cookstown Mr 11th’ is by Cookstown
Kelso 25th and a daughter of the famous ‘Elbert’ ram,
male champion at Carlisle in 2004 to ‘Lamberhurst Hope’ the
Female Champion at the Royal Show in 2005. The proud vendor of this
mighty ram lamb was well known breeder Jim Elliott who runs the Cookstown
flock at Rock, near Dungannon, and who had a very successful outing
to the sale. A full brother of the sale topper, ‘Cookstown
Mr 5th’ which was 5th in his class sold outside the ring for £1,050
to breeders Edward & Shirley Nicholson, Kilkeel, whilst the top
priced ewe lamb was also from Jim’s Cookstown flock and by
the same sire. ‘Cookstown Miss 2nd’ stood 3rd in her
class and sold for £525 to David McLaughlin, Greencastle, Donegal.
Hoping to follow on from the success of his previous purchase of ‘Cookstown
Hamish’ in 2004, Scottish breeder John Cowan from Auchincruive,
Ayr purchased Jim’s top priced shearling ram ‘Cookstown
Leo 7th’ which was 3rd in his class and fetched £787
in the ring.
A new breeder in the lineup for both prizes and top prices was John
Donaghy from Omagh. John, who has only a handful of pedigree ewes,
took 1st prize in the ram lamb class, as well as Reserve Male Champion,
with ‘Coolough Mind Alert’ out of an Islandview ram and
an Omagh ewe. This Group 1 February born lamb went on to sell for £1,200
to Society Chairman, Colin Barnes for his Beechtree flock, and gave
John a pen average of £673.
Immediately after his purchase of the day’s top priced entry,
Donegal breeder Wade McCrabbe fetched a handsome £1,155 for
his ram lamb ‘Ardstewart Messr’. This February born son
of ‘Brickrow Jack of All Trades’ and out of ‘Ardstewart
Jezebel’ stood 2nd in his class, sold to Claudy breeder Patrick
Brolly for his Munreary flock, and gave Wade a pen average of £572.
The top priced shearling ram was the presale Show Champion ‘Lagyveagh
Lock’ from the Glenarm flock of Hugh O’Neill. This March
2007 born Group 1 ram has full Belgian bloodlines, sired by ‘Foks
V/D Vosseberg’ and out of ‘Lagyveagh Honey’ by
the ‘Cannon’ sire and ‘Eve Des 4 Bonniers’.
Purchaser was well known breeder TJ Gormley, Tuam, Co. Galway who
had to pay £1050 for the privilege, leaving Hugh with a pen
average of £498. In addition, the Lagyveagh flock exported
both of their shearling ewe entries. The 2nd placed ‘Lagyveagh
Lisa’ by the ‘Cannon’ sire out of an imported ewe
sold for £630 to Briedge Collinson, Birr, Co. Offaly, whilst ‘Lagyveagh
Louise’ by the ‘Gritter’ sire out of an imported
ewe sold for £525 to RL Montgomerie, Ayrshire.
Kells breeder, Elizabeth McAllister, took the Reserve Show Champion
honours with her shearling ewe ‘Artnagullion Lizzy’ by
the ‘Clary King-Pin’ sire out of ‘Artnagullion
Jackdaw’. This February born ewe fetched £945 and sold
to JC Little, Wigton, Cumbria, who also purchased the 3rd placed ‘Artnagullion
look Good’ for £440. Elizabeth’s 3rd sale entry,
another shearling ewe ‘Artnagullion Lala’ also sold across
the water to Grant Anderson, Dumfriesshire for £440, leaving
a pen average of £608.
The shows 1st prize aged ram came from Glenarm, from the Burnside
flock of Thomas & Hester Palmer. ‘Burnside Jozef’ had
been Show Champion in Dungannon in 2006, and has full Belgian bloodlines,
sired by ‘Firestone’ out of an imported ewe. The 2005
born ram left the ring unsold at £315. First in the lineup
in the ewe lamb class was ‘Beechtree Mel’ from Colin
Barnes flock at Rock, Dungannon. Sired by ‘Rocksolid Knuckle
Duster’ out of ‘Beechtree Korker’, she found a
new home with Sean McCartney, Co. Laois for £378. Alan Lecky’s
1st placed aged ewe, ‘Dergview J17’ by the ‘Whatmore
Handyman’ sire out of a Dergview ewe sold for £250.
Other pedigree breeders, keen to get new bloodlines for their flocks,
purchased some of the top priced lots. Marbeth Scott, Ballyclare,
purchased the top lot from Fergus Harbinson’s Glenkeen flock; ‘Glenkeen
Lazar’, out of Brickrow Golden Balls and Glenkeen Honey, fetched £892.
David Findlay, Leyburn, North Yorkshire picked up the tops from the
Carnew flock of Cynthia Aiken; Carnew Ludo, sired by the Belgian ‘Tyson’ ram
and out of Tullygarley Debbie fetched £819. Former Beltex Society
Chairperson, Mary Dunlop, from Biggar, Lanarkshire purchased the
top ram from Alan Lecky’s Dergview Flock; ‘Dergview L24’ is
sired by the Belgian ‘Hevea Du Their Des Agneaux’ and
out of a Broughton ewe, and sold for £714.
