Chelford Beltex Sale
Thursday 28th August 2008

LADIES RULE AT CHELFORD BELTEX SALE

Demand for Beltex Rams was mixed, but to be fair, so was the quality at the Annual Show and Sale for the Beltex Society held at Chelford Agricultural Centre last Thursday, but the demand for females was terrific throughout with many breeders keen to buy quality breeding replacements.

HIGHLANDER
Supreme Champion, the shearling ram from Frank & Auriol Robinson, HIGHLANDER

With many Welsh customers still missing, due to uncertainty over the Bluetongue regulations, even though many of the sheep were vaccinated and therefore able to go into Wales, trade for crossing rams was adversely affected, although it must be said that those vendors who put forward quality, tight skinned rams with reasonable price expectations were well rewarded throughout.

DOOLEY Lets Get Em
Highest price on the day came from David Thornley’s shearling ram entry,
DOOLEY Lets Get Em

The days top price went to a shearling ram Dooley Lets Get Them, shown by David Thornley from Swadlincote Derbyshire. This ram, by the imported Belgian ram Clovis, made 700 gns to Daventry Northhamptonshire showman D S Wadland.

The Show Champion picked by legendary sheep showman David Gardiner and put forward by former Royal Show winners Frank and Auriol Robinson of Lincolnshire, was Highlander Legend, a son of the 2004 Royal Show Male Champion Highlander Glenesk, who made 650 gns to an unnamed Lancashire breeder. Andrew Bishop, from Eldersfield, Worcester, continued the family tradition by putting forward an excellent pen of shearling rams, including Bishops Liable, a son of Luggsmill Jethro, who made 600 gns, also taken home by Mr Wadland while an excellent pen of strong shearling rams from Les and Sian Hewitt, Penyffordd Wrexham twice peaked at 600 gns, both for sons of Beechtree Hercules in turn bred by the 36,000 gns Tullygarly Elite. The first one standing second in its class, made 600 gns to regular Chelford prime lamb vendor Richard Vernon of Rocester, North Staffordshire, with the second going at the same price to Messrs Brown of Bradwell, Derbyshire.

Amongst the older rams, Marshall Farms from Somerset put forward 9 homebred two shear ram by Westerdale Hipster, Lamberhurst Kirby, which made 390 gns to G P Williams & Co, Abergele.

Once trade moved onto the females, it livened up considerably with several breeders keen to buy well bred ewes of superior confirmation and genetics. Chesterfield, Derbyshire producers David and Matthew Prince saw the best of their gimmers, Stonedge Lucy, a daughter of Cookstown Hamish which stood third in the shearling ewe class, make 680 gns to Kendal, North Cumbria breeder Peter Woof, whilst the Judge, David Gardiner, saw the best of his pen, a gimmer bought as a ewe lamb at Gordon Belchers dispersal sale last December, Puleston Lucy, by the 13,000 gns Airyolland Galahad and who had been winning prizes at a number of shows in the Midlands this year, make 650 gns to D Padkin, Auchenheath, Lanark. The best of the pen from the Freckleton flock of Messrs Roots, Warwickshire, Freckleton Liberty, a twin born daughter of Amyer Man, which had stood third at the Royal Show, made 580 gns to well known pedigree breeders D A Williams, Shifnal, Shropshire with an excellent pen of gimmers from Marshall Farms, which excited considerable interest making to a top of 550 gns to for Lamberhurst Larissa, a triplet born daughter of Westerdale Hipster and also heading to Shifnall with Christine Williams for 520 gns 5 gimmers from Marshall Farms pen made over 500 gns.
