The day's top deal saw a quartet of breeders from Aberdeenshire join forces with a flock from Cumbria to secure the services of the southern Irish-bred Ardstewart Lord Almighty from Wade McCrabbe, Gortaquigley, Raphoe, Co Donegal. This hard-muscled February-born ARR/ARH shearling ram is by Brickrow Jack of All Trades out of a Tullygarley Fergus-sired ewe and he was used in the Ardstewart flock as a ram lamb.

The 10,000gns invoice was split five ways between Mrs Doreen Mair, Aviemore, Victoria Terrace; Peter Kenyon, Home Farm, Muiresk; Stuart Wood, 21 Albyn Grove, Aberdeen; commercial producer, I & H Anderson, Newton of Carnousie, Forglen and Thomas Whiteford, Tercrosset Farm, Brampton, Carlisle.
Next out of the Ardstewart pen was Ardstewart Lightening Maqueen, another Jack of All Trades son out of Ardstewart Helena. He sold at 3,000gns to D Williams, Lodge Farm Shifnal, Shropshire. A third Ardstewart ram, sired by Quarrymount Jupiter out of a Shogun-sired Quarrymount ewe went at 2,000gns to B & J Menzies, Baledmund, Pitlochry, Perthshire. The Ardstewart pen averaged a very respectable £5,250 for 3 sold.

A 5,000gns bid from Northern Ireland breeder Elizabeth McAllister, 92 Parkgate Rd, Kells, Ballymena secured Headlind Lackey for her Artnagullion flock. Consigned by Alan Jackson, Woodyett Farm, Kirkfieldbank, Lanark, this ARR/ARR shearling is by the Belgian-bred Phenomenal V/H Groentenhof out of Headlind Jill. The Headlind flock averaged £1,775 for 7 sold.

The usual high-quality consignment of 10 shearling rams from Neale and Janet McQuistin, High Airyolland, New Luce, Wigtownshire averaged £1,877.50 and was topped at 4,800gns for Airyolland Loyalty, an Airyolland Great Scott son out of Airyolland Honor. This ARR/ARH shearling joins the Glantre flock of Welsh breeder Michael Owens, Glantre, Pontsian, Llandysul. Airyolland Le Grand, by Airyolland Kingsize out of Airyolland Joy was knocked down at 3,200gns to D Williams, Lodge Farm, while Airyolland Loadsamoney, another Kingsize son, out of Airyolland Jinny went under the hammer at 2,500gns to B Breaks, Newlaithe Farm, Newton in Bowland, Clitheroe, Lancashire. Also heading down the M6 was Airyolland Lawman, sold at 2,000gns to Messrs Parker, Horns Farm Slaidburn. This shearling is by Airyolland Klass Act out of Airyolland Forget-me-not.
The McQuistins joined Kevin and Rachel Buckle, Buckles Farm, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria to invest in a 3,000gns purchase in the form of Newton Leo from BK Ryder, Newton Farm Moffat, Dumfries-shire. By Newton Karate out of Newton Hetty, this ARR/ARR shearling was used as a lamb in the Newton flock.

The Buckles flock also enjoyed a successful day, selling to 4,200 gns for Buckles Limited Edition a son of the imported Bullshot out of a homebred ewe. Putting in the final bid was the show judge Paul Slater, Whitley Hey Farm, Butely Cheshire, who bought several of the day's top-priced rams. Buckles Live and Learn, another Bullshot son out of an imported ewe went at 2,300 gns to the Lancashire partnership of P Simpson, Lower Flass, Bolton by Bowland and P Mellin, 60 Every St, Nelson. The Buckles pen averaged £1,792.50 for 7.
Another of Paul Slater's purchases at 3,800gns was the male champion from Dermot Murray, 87 Vianstown Rd, Bonecastle, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Bonecastle Leonardo, is a son of Hardcastle Boy out of a Ballycreely ewe. The reserve spot went to the 2008 Highland Show champion, Clary Lion-Heart from J McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. He was the choice of Welsh butcher, R Rattray, Ffos-y-Fuwch, New Cross Aberystwyth who paid 3,500gns for this son of Clary Kaiser Chief out of Clary Gina. Two 2,000gns sales helped the Clary pen to an average of £1543 for 10 sold. The first of a pair of twin rams sired by Beachy Jack the Lad out of Clary Hallelujah sold to D & W Livestock, Foxhall Farm, Waddingworth, Woodhallspa, Lincs, while the second went to Paul Slater.
Two rams hit the 3,200gns mark. The first, Artnagullion Lig, was a Ulysses son out of Artnagullion Forget-me-not, from Elizabeth McAllister selling to Raymond Flaws, Nisthouse, Evie, Orkney. The Artnagullion pen of 10 shearlings averaged £1317. The second 3,200gns sale came when local breeder, Ann Story, Hobbiesburn, Longtown sold Borderesk Leap Frog, an Airyolland Galliano son out of Borderesk Gi Gi to the Wigtownshire partnership of J McMillan and J Campbell, Carsewalloch Farm, Creetown.
Another item on Paul Slater's shopping list was the 3,000gns Horseclose Larger Than Life from James McGarva, Horseclose, Cummertrees, Annan. By Kinchyle Kinsman, this shearling ram is out of Horseclose Gentle, a former RHASS reserve female champion.
Andrew & Michael Dunlop, Corstane, Biggar sold their pen topper, Broughton Lachman at 2,900gns to Messrs Evans, Bodwrdin, Bodorgan, Anglesey. Out of a Corstane-bred ewe, this ram is by Corstane Knot Out. Broughton breeding also featured in the best from the Dergview pen of Alan Lecky, 35 Garvetagh Rd, Castlederg, Co Tyrone who sold a Whatmore Handyman son out of a Broughton-bred ewe at 2,800gns to LC Wearmouth, Birch Bush, Ettersgill, Co Durham.
A pen of 9 well-grown shearling rams from Glen & Heather Forsyth, Corra Farm, Castle Douglas averaged £1450 and was topped at 2,200 gns for Corra Ludovic. The final bid for this Van t'Ophoverveld King Kong son out of Bishopton Jennifer came from J Metcalfe, Low Fauld, Ruckcroft, Armathwaite, Carlisle. Also selling at 2,200gns was Lanarkshire breeder, Richard Wood, Kingledores, Biggar whose shearling ram, Kingledores Look At Me headed back up to Lanarkshire and the Taylor family's Heatheryhall flock based near Thankerton, Biggar. Ross-shire breeder John Scott, Fearn Farm, Fearn, Tain, saw his pen leader, Fearn Lawrence, go under the hammer at 2,000gns. Buyer of this Brickrow High Action son out of Fearn Entrance, was R McCormick, Boreland Kirkcowan, Newton Stewart.
Two further 2,000gns deals came near the end of the shearling ram sale. Michael Russell, Brae Cottage, Coulter, Biggar, sold Lamington Libedo to Sharpitlaw Farms, Sharpitlaw, Kelso. This ram is by a Jaw sire out of Garrion Junk Shop. At the same money, Ainstable Larry, an Airyolland Jumpstart son out of Ainstable Giggle went to I McConnell, Annfield Cottages, Amisfield, Dumfries with a half-share retained by the seller, B Hall, Ainstable Hall, Ainstable, Carlisle.

Society chairman Colin Barnes, 28 Tullyodonnell Rd, Rock, Co Tyrone, took the 3,000gns top price for a ram lamb with Beechtree Maxi Muscle, a Viagrow son out of Southolm Jinty which was knocked down to 13-year-old Alastair McLean, Heylipol Farm, Isle of Tiree. Wade McCrabbe re-invested 2,600gns in Drumrash Mad Max, a ram lamb by Wonderboy out of an imported ewe and consigned by Mrs Jane Cruikshank, Broomisle Cottage, The Murches, Castle Douglas.
Richard Wood's Lesmahagow Show champion, Kingledores Mighty Mac, went under the hammer at 2,200gns to the Angus partnership of A & J Alston, Chapelton of Menmuir, Brechin, and G & F Burke, Cairndrum Cottage, Chapelton of Menmuir. This ram lamb is by Am Yer Man out of an imported ewe. The Taylor family, Heatheryhall bid to 2,000gns for Callacrag Marksman, a ram lamb by Ardstewart Charles out of Calla Helen which took second prize in the Highland Show ram class for his breeder Andrew Baillie, Calla Crag, Carnwath, Lanarkshire.
Aged rams sold to 3,000gns for the 2-shear Cookstown Hamish son, Clary King-Pin bred by J McMillan and consigned by Elizabeth McAllister selling to C Parry, Fron Farm, Beaumaris, Gwynedd, Anglesey.
