Welsh Winter Fair 2011Beltex lambs took the major championship prizes at the 2011 Welsh Winter Fair. The Hall family from Inglewood Edge, Dalston, Carlisle travelled to Wales from Cumbria with a greatly admired team of lambs and were rewarded with both the Supreme and Reserve Supreme Championships.
Taking the overall Championship were a pair of pure Beltex ewe lambs that weighed 99.5 kg and by the Kingledores sire; one of this pair of lambs was also single Champion at Countryside Live 2011. Judge Will Lloyd described the Champion pair as “an excellent matched pair of lambs that were full of meat and perfect for the butchers trade”. Will Lloyd backed his judgement and purchased the pair at auction for £520 each.
The Hall’s Reserve Overall Champions won the butchers’ weight championship and were a pair of Beltex x lambs weighing 89.5 kg, this pair were also by the Kingledores sire and had previously won the Overall Championship at Countryside Live 2011; these also sold to the judge for £480 each. The Hall family were delighted to win the lamb championships at this prestigious Welsh event in front of large crowds packed around the judging rings. The Reserve continental champions were also a Beltex pair from Dafydd Lewis, Pentwyn, Llanwrda, this pair weighed 93kg. Andrew Bishop who judged the continental butchers lambs described his champions and reserve as "both pairs being well matched and full of meat, with the Hall's champion pair having slightly more cover than the reserves" Andrew Bishops' preference when judging butchers lambs is "for lambs that are full of meat with good fleshing"
Dermot Weaver from Castlemorton Worcestershire won the individual carcass championship with a Beltex x that weighed 21kg and sold at auction for £600 to Randall Parker Foods, Llanidloes. The pairs carcass competition was won by young beltex breeder Rhys Lewis from Cwmduddwr, Rhayader,Powys with an excellent pair of Beltex x lambs with each carcass weighing 24kg and a killing out percentage of 54.5% .
The Welsh Winter fair provided a show of highly
admired Beltex sired lambs and credit must go to all exhibitors both in the
live and carcass sections; there was also excellent live media coverage on
S4C TV which broadcast throughout the show. The Beltex breed continually
achieves the highest averages in Marts throughout Wales every week, and more
farmers are turning to Beltex as their preferred terminal sire in Wales in
response to increased demand from buyers for Beltex x lambs |
