The recent changes to regulations concerning the identification of sheep are now in force. With the exception of sheep intended for slaughter within 12 months of birth all other animals are required to be identified with 2 tags, each carrying the UK flock number and the ETAS issued individual identification number.

The regulation does not specify any restriction on the types or combinations of tags that must be used. The regulation specifies that animals must be identified by 9 months of age or when they leave the holding of birth – whichever is soonest. The lack of specification regarding tag type, combination or colour allows the Society to still combine the necessary official information with additional pedigree information to satisfy both DEFRA and our own needs.

Bearing in mind the amount of information which now needs to be on both tags the Society has chosen to have the official DEFRA information printed on the male (rear) side and the pedigree information on the female (inside) side of the tag.

All Northern Ireland sheep must carry official department information on the green side and Society information on the other side, which this year, is blue.

The tags will carry the Beltex logo to ensure authenticity and to this purpose may only be ordered through the Society office. This includes tags for Northern Ireland members.

In response to comments and requests from members there are two tag types which have been approved by the Beltex Sheep Society for 2008. Any combination of the two may be used.

  1. Allflex Ovina Tag – this is the traditional “Beltex” tag.

  2. Allflex Babe Tag – this is a slightly smaller tag to the Ovina with a different pin and a softer more flexible plastic.

For further information on the tags, logon to www.allflex.co.uk or if you would like a sample of the Babe tag, please ring the Society office.

For 2008 the chosen tag / year colour is BLUE.

Additional Tags – The full range of ALLFLEX products for identifying any other sheep in your flock are now available through the Beltex Society at a discounted price to its members. If you are interested in this offer, please contact Rachel for further details.
