Saturday 13th October 2007
Although the shearling class provided the day's champion
at the Beltex Scotland show and sale at Lanark, it was ram lambs
which provided the day's top prices.
The show was judged by Kevin
Buckle, Buckles Farm, Barras, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria and he
chose as his champion, a shearling from Gavin Shanks & Alan
Thom, Bowmanhurst Estate, Carluke which failed to meet its reserve
price and was withdrawn unsold.
However, Gavin's Inveresk pen provided the sale topper
with a ram lamb, Inveresk Loch Long, selling at 2,000 gns to Society
chairman Colin Barnes. The sire, Van't Ophoverveld King Kong, and
the dam of this ram lamb were both bred in the same flock in Belgium.
The ram lamb's twin, Inveresk Loch Fyne, went under the hammer
at 1,500 gns to John Barclay, Mid Brockloch, Maybole, Ayrshire,
who in turn received the same sum for a March-born, first prize
ram lamb, Beachy Lamborghini, from John McIlwraith, Balig, Ayr.
This lamb is by Clary Hope out of Beachy Heather. Alan Jackson,
Covington Mill, Thankerton, Biggar sold Headlind Lampoon to Paul
Slater, Whitley Hey, Macclesfield, Cheshire who paid 1,800gns for
this son of the Belgian-bred Phenomenal V/H Groetenhof out of a
Belgian-bred ewe Flossie Van de Biesheuvel.
John Cowan, 3 Brickrow, Auchincruive,
Ayr topped the shearling rams with a 850 gns sale of a Cookstown
Hamish son out of a homebred ewe. Buyers were J Guild & Sons,
Laight Farm, New Cumnock, Ayrshire.
