Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club / Sun Shines on Irish Beltex Club Open Day in RaphoeThe Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club held a very successful Educational/Social Day on Saturday 14th April at the Donegal farm of breeders Wade & Alison McCrabbe in Raphoe. More than 80 people from all over Ireland turned up throughout the day in the glorious sunshine to watch the wool preparation and trimming demonstration by club chairman, Kevin McCarthy. Active discussions on show & sale preparation took place with Finbar O’Keefe from A.W. Ennis Ltd on feeding regimes, and Ivan Porter from Osmonds on ‘The Year of the Sheep’ from pre-mating to weaning. The highlight of the superb lunch was the ‘pig on the spit’, and traditional home baking was also the order of the day. Visitors from Southern Ireland included Ms Catherine McDonnell from Co. Mayo, Secretary of Beltex Sheep Breed Society, Ireland, as well as others from Counties Mayo, Sligo, Laois, and Offaly. The day was rounded off with 2 competitions and a raffle. The winner of the Stock Judging competition was Margaret McCartney, Co. Laois, and the winner of ‘Guess the Weight of the 4 Shearling Ewes’ was Ramona Mathews, Co. Offaly. The club is indebted to Wade & Alison McCrabbe for hosting the event and sponsoring the prize for the Stock Judging competition. Thanks must also go to the following people:
