August 2012: Beltex smashed at 12,500gns at Carlisle
Beltex met a keen demand from the commercial sector at the breed society’s premier sale at Carlisle on 16 and 17 August at the breed society’s official sale where ram lamb records were smashed with the day’s top 12,500gns bid.
“Trade was buoyant throughout the 20 hour auctioneering stint which for the first time featured two concurrent rings of shearlings on day two,” commented breed society chairman, Maimie Paterson. “Demand was driven by commercial producers at the packed ringsides realising the premium gains to be made from Beltex cross lambs sold both live and deadweight including for the Dunbia export scheme.”
Harrison and Hetherington’s David Pritchard commented: “We were delighted to once again host this premier sale with tremendous results. Due to the record number of entries we changed the sale format and averages and the number of sheep sold were up on the year. Interest was nationwide with a record attendance and the sale was also well-supported by both Irish vendors and buyers. We are indebted to all the breeders for producing such high quality sheep and I believe the breed is going from strength to strength.”
Sale leader at 12,500gns was the male and overall reserve champion Woodies Snoop Dog, a ram lamb by the 8,000gns Kingledores Rascal from Stuart Wood, Westhill, Aberdeenshire and secured by B McAllister, Ballymena, County Antrim. The same vendor was enjoying his best ever day in the Beltex ring selling a total of 28 entries to gross nearly 60,000gns including the shearling ram Howcommon Romeo, by the 2,000gns Heatheryhall Poker Face for 7,000gns to G E Slater, Butley, Cheshire, and Drumchapel Replay, a shearling ram by Wonderboy, for 5,800gns to J and S Wilkinson, Richmond, North Yorkshire. Woodies Storm, another Rascal ram lamb, sold for 4,200gns to A J Wood, Preston, Lancashire.
Stuart Wood re-invested some of his takings in the day’s second top lot making 10,000gns in a three way bid – himself, R T Wood and Sons, Biggar, Lanarkshire and P Tippetts, Shifnal, Shropshire for the shearling ram Ryder Rooney, a son of the 3,500gns Glantre Norris, from B Ryder, Moffat, Dumfriesshire. One of the consortium Richard Wood, also sold Kingledores Scooby Doo, a ram lamb by the 5,500gns Clary Prankster, for 5,000gns to L and S E Hewitt, Pennyffordd, Cheshire, as well as Kingledores Scally Wag, a ram lamb by the same sire, for 4,800gns to Mr Tippets, one of the earlier 10,000gns consortium. The same vendors also took a bid of 3,000gns from A and J Millar, Insch, Aberdeenshire, for Clary Professor, an aged ram by Borderesk Leap Frog. Another Prankster shearling ram, Kingledores Rambo was knocked down at 3,200gns to T H Roberts, Ruthin, North Wales.
Next came Glantre Royce, a shearling ram by Airyolland Loyalty from M Owens, Llandysul, Ceredigion. This full brother to Glantre Norris, sire of the 10,000gns Ryder Rooney, was knocked down for a call of 9,000gns from H C Jewitt, Barnard Castle, County Durham.
Ardstewart Sherlock was purchased for 5,000gns in a three way bid from J W Cowan, Auchincruive, Ayrshire, G and S Sinclair, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, and S and W McCormack, West Linton, Peebleshire. This ram lamb by Broughton Pound Stretcher was bred by W and A McCrabbe, Lifford, County Donegal.
Heading the female trade at 7,000gns was the female and supreme champion Whatmore Ruby, a shearling gimmer by Woodies Perfection from S A Gibbons, Brecon, Powys was knocked down sold to R W Hudson, Plumtree, Nottinghamshire. Ruby was supreme breed and interbreed champion at Three Counties earlier in the season. Buckles Rebecca, a shearling gimmer by Dooley Napal from K and R Buckle, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria went for a call of 5,000gns to the same buyer. This one was full ET sister to the Great Yorkshire Show female champion. The same vendor also took 4,000gns for Buckles Ricochet, a shearling ram also by Napal, and purchased by Paul Slater. The Buckles’ sons, Jack and Tom were also amongst the top lots with Broxty Ruby, a shearling gimmer by Newton Leo securing a bid of 4,000gns from Messrs Hudson.
The day’s fourth 5,000gns bid went to the shearling gimmer Curwill Hill Reality, the reserve female champion from D Towers, Wray, Lancashire to T Linton, Cleghorn, Lanarkshire.

Carlisle Beltex trade tops at 12,500gns
Today’s Carlisle male champion Woodies Snoop Dog from Stuart Wood excited the ram lamb trade early in the sale taking a bid of 12,500gns to beat the record ram lamb price paid for his father Kingledores Rascal at last year’s sale. This one is out of a dam by Cookstown Hamish and sold to the Artnagullion flock of the McAllister family. The video of his selling is posted below and the full sale report will follow later.
